The Challenges

As with many of our challenges, the turnaround time was very short; Pre-Production was about two days of planning, Production was two days, and Post-Production and delivery within three days after that. Additionally, this project had the most severe case of “Too Many Cooks in the Kitchen!” We had to accommodate the wishes of five different galleries; which totaled ten owners, corporate sponsor standards of Hyatt-McCormick Place Regency Hotel and Miller, all five galleries had to split a finished piece showcase time of ten minutes; which gave each gallery one and a half minutes plus the showcase of the inaugural trolley tour event, as well as deliver High Quality video information that could both showcase all galleries and be educational for viewers.

To give you an idea of the “boiler room” atmosphere of the project, you could compare the run and gun, non-stop delivery of the project to an NFL playoff football game, in which the offensive is playing against the clock in a “No Huddle” situation. In Post-Production, we could recall pulling an all-nighter to get the rough drafts viewable to the Bronzeville Art District gallery owners. Recalling conference calls at midnight with Director & Producer Antonio Wells, the editor, and all of the Bronzeville Art District gallery owners about how each particular gallery would be covered, narration, interview style versus gallery showcase or both in combination, a lot of issues were tackled that night!

The Solutions

“Too Many Cooks in the Kitchen!” the way to deal with this situation is to be humble, yet interject Professional opinions regarding the educational integrity of the final video piece. Due to our timeframe, we did not have the luxury to invite all gallery owners to the editing suite to give opinions while they watched. We took an interesting and time-effective approach to solving this issue. Taking advantage of Flash Video technology, we gathered opinions via conference calls, performed edits and changes while in conversation, and compressed rough draft footage, uploaded it to a live web server so the gallery owners can all view drafts via a web page. After several revolutions of this, by 7 a.m. the next morning we were able to finalize the drafts into a deliverable DVD.

Strategic Planning, Experience and a niche for delivering Quality, Cost Effective Visual Solutions all helped in delivering another successful video production piece.
